Filming to Share and Connect

In June 2023, we invited a filmmaker to capture some of the story of Belong in Plymouth—and to spark new conversations about what it really means to belong.

Karen shared her excitement: “We have some interest from people in high places and low places,” she wrote. “This is about bringing together people who haven’t had the time to get to know each other well.”

The filming wasn’t just about documenting our work. It was about using the camera as a relational tool—an excuse to gather, talk, and reflect. We weren’t rehearsed or polished. We were real.

The team made space for people to speak freely about their own experiences of isolation, connection, community work, and hope. It was a chance to see and hear each other in new ways.

Alongside the footage, we also used the opportunity to talk about our values. Why do we do this work? What keeps us going? How do we keep learning and adapting?

The final clips will be shared with partners like The King’s Fund—but more importantly, they’ll be used in local conversations, training, and storytelling sessions.

Because at the heart of Belong in Plymouth is a belief that stories connect us. And sometimes, pressing record is the best way to start listening.
